Feature Film
Experiential Video
Role: Creative Director / Producer
Client: NDA
For this to be released feature film, I led a team of scientific and 3D animators to create a series of live animations of the brain. The animations are an artistic interpretation of ‘activations’ within different parts of the brain: cerebral cortex, hypothalamus, pineal gland, etc.

Creative Director + Producer
Led a team of 3D and scientific animators to create artistic iterations of the Brain. Worked with the director of the film and production designer to program a suite of animations to be triggered live on set. The process started with researching and gaining a deeper knowledge of the brain’s pathways. I worked closely with Scientific Illustrator Veronica Falconari to design a model that felt realistic and expressive. Several additional animators took the piece through look development, adding motion, and exporting the assets to be programmed live. Sourced a programmer and managed files to be delivered on set.

Brain Animations
Scientific Derivative
Worked closely with a scientific animator to create a precise model of the subjects brain. As a creative director, I worked closely with scientific illustrator Veronica Falconieri to identify, isolate, and create masks of the different parts of the brain. Although our model’s foundation is scientific based, we created a series of animations that artistically represented the physiological interactions of the brain and neurons.
Layered Video
The Brain Animations are rendered as a series of layers with alpha, to be stacked and triggered live in the VJ program Resolume Arena. This method allows a live visual tech to trigger the animations live and with the cues of the Director. The layers consisted of isolated parts of the brain that coincide with different stimulus and brain activations. This live and modular approach was also informed by working with a live animal on set. We wanted to approach the project with the ability to be adaptive and agile to any cue from the director, on command.
Look Development
With our foundation brain model, I worked with several animators to both build motion and finalize the texture/color of each render. For the motion, we referenced fireworks, neural networks, movement of liquid ink and lightning.
